Q&A with Ashelyn Drake

What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

As a kid I loved watching reruns of the original Dark Shadows TV series. Well, one day my brain was doing its usual wandering and I remembered a character on that show who was a phoenix. Every so many years she burned in a fire and was reborn. As soon as I remembered that episode, I knew I wanted to write about phoenixes.

What was your favorite part of writing this book?

It’s such a balance of fantasy and romance. Since I write both, it was the best of both worlds for me. I could combine my two favorite genres and tell a story that really appeals to two different audiences.

What is your favorite line from your book?

I really love the opening lines:
In one month, I’m going to die and be reborn from my own ashes. I’ll forget everything and nearly everyone I know. But I can’t worry about that right now. Jeremy needs me, and I need him to remember. Please remember me.

What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

Hmm, I’d have to say The Vampire Diaries. While there are no vampires in my book, there’s a huge love story and fantastical beings. That very much fits The Vampire Diaries kind of story.

If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say? 

My publisher put this line on my cover and I think it’s awesome: “Forget everything you know. Let the fire consume you.”

Books to Movies Giveaway Hop

One of my favorite subjects are books to movies. I LOVE watching adaptations and studying the skill of turning a book into a movie. Adaptations are getting a lot of attention now with the success of the Twilight and The Hunger Games series.
