New Release: The Full Moon Rises by Courtney Rene

I'm very excited to share that, the sequel to A Howl in the Night by Courtney Rene, The Full Moon Rises is here!

Life as a shape shifter is not as easy as it would seem, especially not for Abigail Staton. Being a teenager and a shape shifter is even harder, not to mention being one of the last remaining females in the two competing wolf clans and the only girl in her new schools. Striving to find where she belongs, gets sidelined when an old threat to the wolves resurfaces. The clans are forced to come together in a semi-truce, and the already dominant males become even more controlling in trying to protect their own as well as their secret. Abby finds herself in the middle yet again, but this time, she will need both clans in order to survive.

I'm happy to host Courtney and learn more about her new book:

1. What was the spark or initial idea that started your book?

I started out writing horror stories.  It has always been one of my favorite genre’s.  But somewhere along the way I began writing less horror and more drama type books.  This series was a way of branching the two types of genres together.  It is a bit horror-esq as it’s werewolves, but it’s also Contempory as it’s about teens finding their way in their own worlds.

2. What was your favorite part of writing this book?

My favorite part was the end.  I don’t want to give it all away but I struggled with how to get Abby, my main character, out of the corner I’d backed her into.  I didn’t want someone to have to save her, as she’s a strong girl all on her own, but I also wanted her to struggle with the idea of not being able to save herself all the time.  Sometimes you have to ask for help.  It as fun working out different scenarios and then figuring out which one worked the best.

3. What is your favorite line from your book?

This one is easy.  It makes me laugh every time I read it.  Stupid Derek and his stupid gorgeous face were my last thoughts before I finally allowed sleep to claim me”  I swear you can hear the frustration in these words even without the background leading up to it.  Yes, it still makes me laugh

4. What movie or television show would you say is most like your book in tone, topic, and/or characters?

I have been thinking about this question all week long and it’s a hard one.  I guess it could be Twilight, but I hate to compare to that book, as it’s not really the same.  I think Bella is a  very weak girl and it annoys me.  So, then I guess it could be Harry Potter, as Abby was thrust into a world she was oblivious too and made to adapt.  Yes, I think I will go with Harry Potter.  Although, nothing really compares to Harry Potter.  Not really.

5. If your book was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?

The Full Moon Rises – Bad things Happen in the Dark.

10 Reasons Why The Bourne Legacy is Awesome!

Beware there are going to plenty of spoilers in this post if you haven't seen The Bourne Legacy yet.

1. This guy right here! Jeremy Renner. I was one of those who was livid when I heard they were continuing the series without Matt Damon. But I quickly changed my opinion once I saw Jeremy Renner in action as Aaron Cross.

2. And this gal! Rachel Weisz. She is always awesome whenever she joins an action movie. I was immediately hooked as soon as Dr. Marta Shearing came on screen. Rachel plays smart so well (probably because she is super smart :-)). The first thing I loved about Marta was her intelligence, then we see her kindness to both the subjects of the tests and her coworkers, and then we get to see her in action.

3. The shooting at the lab! This scene was incredibly intense. And my first thought was, all those other workplace shootings, what if one of them had been a clean-up from a government? And that's what good movies do they take from the real world, show the horror of something that does happen, and give a reason for it which is even more horrifying than the real world instances.

4. This action sequence is beyond awesome and we all need to bow down to the stunt coordinators for this sequence. The clip shortens it down (boo), but you can get the basics from it.

5. Sadly, I couldn't find a picture of Marta shooting at Aaron and her attackers once Aaron jumps in and stops them from killing her. I just love that as soon as she is released she runs for the gun and shoots at everyone. You go girl!

6. In the clip under #4 at 1.22, we have my absolute favorite of Aaron climbing up the side of the house.

7. And this talking scene between Aaron and Marta. I love the intensity between the actors as he's judging whether she's telling the truth.

8. This is one of my favorite sequences (and that's saying a lot) in the movie. The Number 5 scene. Aaron has just rescued Marta from being assassinated and in one quick scene we see how efficient Aaron is in clean up and planning while Marta is catching up mentally. Then we find out just how little Marta knows about her test subjects.

9. This sequence (which is shortened in the above clip) shows through an action sequence how much Marta and Aaron have grown to care about each other. Aaron has already told Marta to go out on her own, as he is sick, and she will be safe using the techniques he's taught her. At this point, he has woken from his fever (though she doesn't know that) and sees that the cops are about to storm the place they were hiding out in. Marta could turn around and go, disappear, and be safe, but she chooses to warn him even though it puts her right into the sights of the cops. After he escapes, he could choose to run to safety, but instead he follows the sounds of the police pursuing her and rescues her. Big kudos for Jeremy and Rachel in those last few seconds of dialogue in showing their relationship. Something I really enjoyed was how they were able to make that connection and show it with just looks and a few words while running for their lives.

Book Blast and #Giveaway: Numbers Game by Rebecca Rode

Numbers Game

Numbers Game by Rebecca Rode

Treena is nervous for Rating Day. A single number will brand her forever—a valuable citizen, or a pathetic waste of space. Her top-Rated boyfriend is confident their scores will coincide so they can attend the academy together. But when the big day arrives, her true number shocks everyone.

To get her life—and boyfriend—back, she must go undercover and expose a military spy. Doesn’t sound too hard, except that someone wants her dead. And then there’s Vance, the mysterious soldier with a haunted past and beautiful brown eyes. Together, they discover a dark numbers conspiracy, one that shatters the nation’s future. Treena must join up with Vance if she is to survive the dangerous game of numbers—and the terrible war that rages within her heart.

Excerpt

“Your Rating is wrong,” Vance said. “Their precious Rating system says absolutely nothing about you and what you’re capable of.”

I shook my head. “So far, everything I’ve done has proven my number absolutely correct.”

“Treena.” His tone softened. “I don’t know why you that happened to you. But I do know one thing.” He stopped on the step below me, and I whirled to face him. We were the same height now, and his expression was fierce. “You are the most loyal, the most determined, and the most fascinating girl I’ve ever met. No number could ever describe you.”

The deadness inside cracked, and the pain came flooding back. I felt like a five-year-old again. Falling, grasping for a handhold, for something to save me. “It doesn’t matter now. Tali's dead.”

He gave me a long look. Then he sat down, right on the steps, easing me down next to him. I lay my head on his shoulder and let him pull me close. The warmth of his embrace felt completely and utterly right. For a long moment, I allowed myself to forget about the past few days. There was no empress, no punishment mode, and no mission. There was just us. The world was cool and dark, and his touch sent my heart pumping as if it had just awakened from hibernation.

“Dying isn't the worst thing to happen to someone,” he continued thoughtfully. “Anyone coward can die. The hardest thing is being left behind, trying to make sense of a world without them.”

I tilted my head back and allowed myself to look up into Vance’s eyes. They were dark, pulling, as if absorbing all the light that entered, saving it for some future purpose. His eyebrows were choppy, untrimmed, and his lips chapped. But somehow, it worked. It was simply . . . him. No surgeries, no tallies of volunteer hours and checklists. Vance just took life one day at a time, keeping his family safe, trying to put the pieces of himself back together. I could see it, the pain in his heart. It was something we shared now.

A warm feeling spread through my chest until I thought it would burst. This was who he really was. The tumultuous battle within him seemed to have trickled away, leaving one gallant, vulnerable boy. A boy who was looking at me as if I were something precious—who looked at me, instead of at my Rating. His eyes flitted between mine, his confidence replaced with uncertainty.

“It feels good to finally choose sides, doesn’t it?”

“Whose side are you on, then?”

His chin was just above mine, and he lowered it until our eyes were level. Then his hand tilted my chin upward toward his. His fingers brushed the side of my face, cradling it gently in his firm hand. I felt his breath on my face, felt the battle within him as well as I felt it in myself. But something pulled me toward him.

“Yours,” he said. He closed the distance between us, slowly, then paused.

And our lips met.
