Image
BLACK HULL by Joseph A. Turkot Blurb Imagine a distant future where technology’s inexorable advance has halted for all but the richest .1% of humanity. Indigents who still have it fly spaceships that are hundreds of years old, and entreat the help of robots that are relics of the past. The wealthy, having achieved immortality through science, and secured total power through purchase of all government seats, spread and consume the last resources of the cosmos. The unlucky majority pursue one goal: The generational commitment to buying a ticket into Utopia—the virtual reality program that simulates what in antiquity was known as heaven. Little do they question the mysterious origin and purpose of their gloried destination. Writing and Homeschooling

After two years off from officially homeschooling, I will be jumping back in this school year with a 1st and 7th grader. My older daughter decided two years ago that she wanted to go to school. After lots of discussion and tests we made the decision to enroll her in our local elementary school. Despite lots of negatives (judging be her complaints) she LOVED school. Last year was the jump to middle school. Neither my husband or I were comfortable with her going to the local public middle school so we made the decision to enroll her in the private catholic school. Part of the decision was based on her younger sister entering Kindergarten the same year and her wanting to go to school if sissy did. Both went to the private school as it suited the younger one better. Unfortunately, the older daughter hated the school, we waited for it to grow on her, but it never did. Because she disliked it so much we gave her the option to attend the public middle school this year. But both her and her ...

Guest Post: Anne E. Johnson - Why Sci Fi?

Image
Why Sci Fi? I thought it would be easy to write about my choice to become a science fiction novelist. After all, I’ve been a fan of science fiction novels, short stories, movies, and TV shows for decades. But explaining why science fiction holds such an appeal for me is harder than I expected. Of course, there are all the usual responses to “Why do I like science fiction,” but none quite covers it adequately. Science fiction does allow for a welcome element of hope. Humanity is pretty screwed up in many ways, and it’s wonderful to imagine there are other creatures out there who have a truly healthy concept of civilization and society. But, seriously, how many science fiction stories are about well-adjusted species? No, we prefer to read about creatures just as messed up as we are. So that can’t be it. In the introduction to a recent edition of her masterful novel The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. Le Guin says, “Science fiction is metaphor...If I could have said it...

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Spectors by Angelia Almos

Image
Spectors by Angelia Almos.  A space pirate almost loses everything she cares about when she’s blackmailed by the military into running a dangerous mission. Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday Snippet:  Bang! A door closed in the house. She spun, her energy pistol secure in her hand. Felicity ejected the disc and passed it off to her. She slid it into a hidden pocket in her shirt. If they got caught, she had to protect the disc. Rutledge couldn’t find it on them or he wouldn’t bother with questions before taking care of them. It took Felicity another dragging minute to erase herself out of the computer and hibernate it. Kristy examined the room in frustration. No windows and the single door they had come through. Spectors by Angelia Almos.  A space pirate almost loses everything she cares about when she’s blackmailed by the military into running a dangerous mission. Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday Snippet: She spun when she was finally out of their sight. “In-laws? What have you been telling them?” He shook his head, but didn’t answer her. “What did you find out?” She pulled her personal panic back in and focused on the job. “There might be signs that Mecha’s been infiltrated.” "They aren't safe here.” “Andrew,” she started to protest what she knew he was going to ask. “I’m not leaving them here with everything going on.” She had two choices, she could give in and let his family tag along or she could refuse and he would jump ship and stay here to protect his family. ........... Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Spectors by Angelia Almos

Image
Spectors by Angelia Almos.  A space pirate almost loses everything she cares about when she’s blackmailed by the military into running a dangerous mission. Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday Snippet:  The building was dark, signaling it didn’t run nonstop. Which was good and bad news. Good because it wasn’t likely they’d accidentally run into someone in the wrong place at the wrong time, and bad because if they did run into someone they wouldn’t have an excuse to explain their presence. They walked past their target and turned down an alley a couple of buildings away after Kristy was sure no one was paying attention to them. She pulled Felicity back into a doorway as a bored armed guard sauntered by them. She tried to make out his patch to see what type of guard or police he was, but couldn’t see it clearly from their current hiding place. She wasn’t willing to reveal where they were to know exactly who he worked for. Once he was out of sight, they crept down to...

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Spectors by Angelia Almos

Image
Spectors by Angelia Almos.  A space pirate almost loses everything she cares about when she’s blackmailed by the military into running a dangerous mission. Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday Snippet: She examined the sprawling city more closely. Hardly any of the buildings were higher than one story so she set their path to head to the few multi-story buildings. The night barely hid the wear and tear the city had endured over the years. The mining companies obviously hadn’t invested their profits in keeping the town looking nice. Small puffs of dust came up from the sidewalks from each of their footfalls as they moved down the line of buildings. Several people darted nervous glances in their direction. “We should be blending in more,” Kristy said, her senses already telling her something was wrong on Mecha. “Maybe they know something’s up and are wary of strangers,” Felicity guessed, edging a little closer to Kristy. “Maybe,” she said, she hoped not, it was never ...

I turned to look at the giant screen television mounted over the bar in the busy restaurant. The New Horizons robotic spacecraft had captured a perfect picture of Pluto.
