Interview & #Giveaway: Aberrant by Ruth Silver
Please welcome Ruth Silver the author of Aberrant (Book 1 in the Abberant Series) to my blog.
What was the spark or initial idea that started Aberrant?
I wanted to write a Dystopian novel. It’s not hard to imagine why, I love reading Dystopian YA fiction. The initial idea is from a series of factors and thoughts that I had – what our world would be like if everyone was given equal status. We know in our current society there are people that are homeless, without jobs or food. Some of these people have touched our lives; they are our friends and neighbors. It wasn’t such a far leap to create a Dystopian world that gives it’s people everything but there had to be a higher cost in doing that, making it a far cry from Utopian.
What was your favorite part of writing Aberrant?
Being able to create a world and to research different topics and ideas. My absolute favorite part was writing the ending because the story meshed together and still leaves room for two additional books in the series.
What is your favorite line from Aberrant?
“Just a short time ago I’d been an ordinary eighteen-year old girl. Except the reality was, I wasn’t ordinary. I was anything but ordinary. I was aberrant.”
What movie or television show would you say is most like Aberrant in tone, topic, and/or characters?
Children of Men, is probably the closest comparison for movies in regards to topic. Children of Men is more of an adult film, whereas Aberrant is a book that is written for young adults, fourteen and up.
If Aberrant was made into a movie and you got to design the movie poster, what would the tagline say?
Freedom and love come at great cost.
Aberrant by Ruth Silver
In the future dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government’s match in marriage and “The Day of the Chosen”, a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn’t existed in generations. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she’s arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence.
Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from “The Day of the Chosen.” The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system. With Joshua’s help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay. Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands. Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.
