Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Unicorn Keep by Angelia Almos

Unicorn Keep by Angelia Almos

Unicorn Keep is my new young adult fantasy about Jiline who switches places with her best friend, Madelen, to become a unicorn keeper. It should be coming out in May if production stays on target with no major disasters.

“I am Mage Daniah,” her voice spread over the square. “Your families have a wonderful opportunity presented to them today. One of you may become a Unicorn Keeper.”

Jiline’s breath stopped. Her parents had been whispering last night as to why the mages had come. Sometimes mages traveled looking for apprentices, but occasionally they needed new keepers: children and young people of pure thought to care for the unicorns a small group of mages protected year-round at the Keep.

“This is a great honor for your family.” Mage Daniah paused and looked down the line again. Her hand suddenly appeared from the swirling robe.

  1. I love the cover! What age group is this aimed at? I have a 10-yr-old who's horse mad and loves fantasy.

    1. It is young adult - though I've been told my voice is closer to middle-grade. There's a romance in it, but it is pretty clean with only two kisses. One of my beta readers doesn't generally read YA, but she really likes it so feels it crosses over to the adult audience. :-) So, I would say if your 10 year old is okay with a little romance she/he might like it.

    1. Who doesn't love a good unicorn story? :-)

  4. Once my niece is able to read on her own, she'd enjoy this too...though I think it would be harder and harder to find children of pure thought, at least in this country...

    1. That's why it's fantasy (the children of pure thought). ;-) Though we learn later that the children of pure thought is not really what the mages are looking for.

  6. I love it so far, did you test it out on your miniature audience at home? I have a nine year-old brother who would probably even like it. I think there's enough action and intrigue to keep boys interested too.

    1. Thanks Jen. Oh I wish my little mini audience would read it. It's like pulling teeth to get her to read anything of *mine*. Which is funny because she loved HORSE CHARMER. But she will not read it in manuscript form - has to be in actual book form.

  7. Are there actual unicorns? or just mages called unicorns? I love horses in science fiction, and so far they've been in all of mine except Jarn, who's too early.

    1. Thanks, Cat. I wanted to write a book with unicorns in it so sat down and started thinking unicorns, unicorns, unicorns, after a few days this was the book that emerged.
