Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Unicorn Keep

Welcome to my Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday snippet. You can read other #sffsat snippts here.

Unicorn Keep is a young adult fantasy romance about a girl who swaps places with her best friend to become a unicorn keeper.

Adding a note for clarification: This scene is from the POV of Herrick, the other main character, and takes place while Jiline is down in the unicorn valley for the first time. His mother is the mage in charge of the Keep.

His mother's hands moved in a soothing gesture. “Besides there could be several trainees in that slice of woods. We don’t know if it is just her.”

He sliced the air with his own hand to cut off the incantation she was attempting to weave around him. Slamming his hands against the wall, he attempted to shatter it with a magical blow, but it bounced back. Helplessness filled him. He shook off her hand and bolted for the door that would lead him inside the Keep. There was more than one way to the trailhead.
He slammed into another magical barrier.

  1. Perhaps I missed some snippets? Last one I'd seen, your main character had just run off out of a clearing...

Although this one was a good snippet, conveying the emotions well, I was a bit lost.

  2. I'm with T.M. on this one. It's a good snippet, but I'm confused as to which characters we have in this scene.

  4. Looks like it's building up to a nice fight scene!! Exciting!!

  5. I loved the combination of physical and magical struggle. It made both seem all the more interesting and potent. I could see someone would feel helpless if that had no effect on an obstacle.

  6. Methinks Herrick is a bit more interested in what's going on than his mother wants.

  7. I like that his mother is trying to protect him on both a magical and physical level and he shrugs off both to meet his goal. Good parent/child dynamic. I see the second barrier as where their conflict is going to pinnacle. He can only maneuver around so much before having to face a decision point, which I'm guessing is around the corner, or magical barrier in this case.

  9. Why is his mother trying to restrain him?

  11. He's a persistent one, isn't he? I like the struggle for independence from his mother, even if she's doing this for his own good.
